Recently, the Academy of Europe announced the list of elected academicians of 2018, which includes Professor Shang Biwu from the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The Academy of Europe, founded in 1988 by the Royal Society (UK) and Academies of Sciences of several European countries, is one of the most influential and renowned scientific organizations in the world which stretches extensively over different regions and academic fields. Headquartered in London, it has 21 sections, which cover a great number of subjects including humanities, social sciences, physical sciences and technology. SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) comprises the five European Academy Net-works (the Academy of Europe, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council, the European Council of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering, and the Federation of European Academies of Medicine). Among them, the Academy of Europe is the only organization that can represent the European Union. Until now, there are more than 3800 academicians in the Academy of Europe, including 73 Nobel Prize winners, 15 Fields Medal winners, as well as six Turing Award winners. 
As for the election procedure, candidates are first recommended by academicians to a specific section. Then, each section committee reviews candidate lists and makes recommendations on suitability for election. Next, these lists are discussed by the Nomination Committee, who finally creates a class list. Class lists are then submitted to Council for deliberations and, finally, the Board of Trustees elects new members. Currently, there are only a handful of Chinese (including people from Hong Kong) in the academy, most of whom are engaged in physical science, and Professor Shang Biwu is one of the nine academicians under the age of 40 so far. 
Who is Shang Biwu

Graduated from the English department of Anhui Normal University, Shang Biwu obtained master’s and doctoral degrees in SJTU and completed his post-doctoral research in Comparative Literature and World Literature in Central China Normal University. He has been elected as Changjiang Youth Scholar by the Ministry of Education of China, Youth Talent by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, as well as Fellow of the National Humanities Center of United States. He is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor in SFL. Besides, he is the editor-in-chief of Frontiers of Narrative Studies (De Gruyter), and a member in the editorial boards of several magazines including Arcadia: International Journal of Literary Culture (A&HCI), Interdisciplinary Studies of Literature (A&HCI), and Foreign Literature Studies. His fields of scholarship mainly involve narratology, ethical literary criticism, contemporary English fiction, and world and comparative literature. Shang is also a participator in over ten projects that have been approved by the National Social Science Fund of China as Major Projects. Besides, he has published two books, more than 40 papers on CSSCI, and over 20 papers on A&HCI. He was also the winner of the Third Prize for Excellent Research Work in Humanities and Social Sciences awarded by the Ministry of Education of China in 2015, and the successive winner of the First Prize for Excellent Research Work in Humanities and Social Sciences by Shanghai Municipal Government in 2014 and 2016.
