Shanghai Jiao Tong University Hosts Seminar on “Translation and the History of the Communist Party of China”
The Seminar on “Translation and the History of the Communist Party of China” was held in Yang Yongman Building of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) on June 19, 2021. The seminar was jointly organized by the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) of SJTU and Shanghai Science and Technology Translation Society (SSTTS), and hosted by the Translation and Intercultural Research Center of SFL of SJTU, and co-hosted by the editorial office of Shanghai Journal of Translators.
Zhou Cheng, Deputy Secretary of the CPC of SJTU, and Li Hongming, member of the party leading group of SSTTS, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Wang Ning, Luo Xuanmin, He Gangqiang and other renowned experts and scholars delivered keynote speeches. Ding Jian, Secretary of CPC SFL Committee, Chang Hui, Executive Associate Dean of SFL, Zhu Yifan, Vice Secretary of CPC SFL Committee, and teachers and students from many universities, as well as online audiences attended the meeting.
In his speech, Zhou Cheng pointed out that this seminar put foreign language research into the context of the centennial of the founding of the party, which was of great significance. He also introduced to the experts the achievements and characteristics of SFL of SJTU in cultivating translators. He hoped that the seminar will make more meaningful explorations on the integration of China and foreign countries in constructing new concepts, new categories, and new expressions under the Chinese discourse system.
On behalf of SSTTS, Li Hongming expressed her warm congratulations to the successful convening of the conference, and affirmed the achievements made by SSTTS and SJTU in jointly promoting the translation cause and making advances in academic activities, translation research and teaching, and translation talent training.
Chang Hui expressed his sincere welcome and gratitude to all the participating scholars, introduced SFL’s discipline construction, and emphasized that the translation discipline will continue to utilize the traditional advantages of corpus translation and actively explore new research frontiers. He hoped that Chinese foreign language researchers and educators will strengthen academic discussions and improve national translation capabilities, and wished the seminar a complete success.
Professor Zhu Yifan from SJTU summarized the conference, emphasizing the significance of translation studies for the research of party history, and encouraging scholars to think about and explore the ways and means of translating Chinese Marxist classics.
It is believed that contemporary Chinese foreign language researchers and educators will be able to take over the baton of the times and create new glory and new achievements!
