The Second Online Advanced Seminar on Comparative Literature and Trans-cultural Studies: Methods and Thinking Successfully Held

The Second Online Advanced Seminar on Comparative Literature and Transcultural Studies: Methods and Thinking was held on September 4, 2021 on live streaming platforms of Tencent Meeting and Bilibili. The seminar, co-sponsored by the Association of Comparative Literature and Trans-cultural Studies of China Association of Foreign Literature (CAFL), and the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), aimed to consolidate the foundation for the development of the discipline of comparative literature and trans-cultural studies, to reserve talents for the academic community, to make insightful suggestions on enhancing cultural confidence and thus promoting trans-cultural communication and exchanges.

Hu Hao, standing member of CPC SJTU Committee and Director of Publicity Department, Chang Hui, Executive Vice Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, SJTU, attended the meeting and delivered opening speeches. The opening ceremony was presided over by Peng Qinglong, President of the Association of Comparative Literature and Trans-cultural Studies of CAFL, Distinguished Professor of SJTU, Vice Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, as well as the initiator and organizer of the seminar.

The guest speakers of the seminar included Cao Shunqing (Distinguished Professor of Sichuan University, Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts),  Cheng Chaoxiang (Professor of Peking University/Shihezi University, Vice President of the China Association for the Study of Literature in English and English Literature of CAFL, Vice President of the China Association for the Study of American Literature), Jiang Chengyong (Professor of Zhejiang Gongshang University, Honorary President of Zhejiang Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences Circles, Leading Talent of the National Ten Thousand Talents Program), Liu Jianjun (Distinguished Professor of SJTU, Director of the Center for European Classics and Medieval Literature Studies, Director of the Specialized Committee for Foreign Literature of the Chinese Higher Education Association), Wang Jinghui (Professor of Tsinghua University and Executive Director of the Australian Studies Center of Tsinghua University), Zhou Min (Distinguished Professor of Hangzhou Normal University, Leading Talent of West Lake Scholars Program, and Fulbright Senior Scholar at Columbia University, USA).

The guest speaker sessions were moderated by Professor Du Lanlan, Professor Yang Feng, Professor Shang Biwu, Professor Yang Mingming, Professor Wu You, and Professor Wei Xiaofei from the School of Foreign Languages, SJTU.

More than 200 scholars from universities and research institutions registered and attended the seminar on Tencent Meeting and the total number of viewers of the Bilibili live broadcast reached more than 10,000 online.

The guest speakers gathered online to conduct thematic discussions and exchanges on the issues concerning methodology, research paradigm, and talent training of comparative literature and trans-cultural studies.
Finally, Professor Du Lanlan delivered a speech at the closing ceremony, which was presided over by Professor Xue Yuan from the School of Foreign Languages, SJTU.
