The 6th Annual Forum of the Center for Corpora and Intercultural Studies Successfully Held
The 6th Annual Forum of the Center for Corpora and Intercultural Studies was successfully held at the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University from December 24 to 25, 2021. Fourteen experts and scholars from the School of Foreign Languages, including Wu Shiyu, Yang Bingjun, Ding Hongwei, Lei Lei and Tian Yan, made presentations on the topics of corpus, theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics and interdisciplinary research.
Prof. Chang Hui, Executive Associate Dean of School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered the opening speech. He summarized the progress made by faculty and students in academic research in recent years, and affirmed the innovative research and outstanding contributions of the center members in their respective fields. At the same time, he offered constructive comments on the future direction of corpus research, emphasizing the combination of basic and applied research. Finally, he offered an outlook on the development of the Center for Corpora and Intercultural Studies and wished the forum a success.
The first presentation of the Center came from Professor Shiyu Wu. Professor Wu discussed the bottleneck problems in English learning by Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners across different proficiency levels. Associate Professor Fengchao Zhen's presentation was entitled “New Approaches to Corpus-Based Literary Research: Meaning Construction of Textual Object of "Hailsham" in "Never Let Me Go”. Ms. Yu Yang's presentation was entitled “A Questionnaire-Based Study of Chinese Japanese Learners' Acquisition of Corresponding Intransitive and Transitive Verbs Pairs". Associate Professor Lu Yuanwen's presentation was entitled "A Study on Peer Review Application Based on CANVAS Platform - A Case Study of College English Teaching". Associate Professor Chunyan Wang's presentation was entitled "A Study on the Teaching Model of 'Real-time Collaborative Online Text Editing' in College English Classroom". Prof. Lei Lei's presentation was entitled "Syntactic Complexity In Adapted Extracurricular Reading Materials". Prof. Yan Tian's presentation was entitled "A Complex Dynamic System Approach to Predict Learners' Online Translation Learning Behavior". Prof. Hongwei Ding's presentation was entitled "Speech Prosody in Mental Disorders". Prof. Bingjun Yang presented on "From Aristotle's Metaphor Theory to Halliday's Grammatical Metaphor". Associate Professor Xu Zheng's presentation was entitled “Chinese Morphology Revisited: A Perspective Based On Bloomfield's Original Definition of Morphology”. Associate Professor Cao Hui's presentation was entitled "Exploring on Ideological Work Strengthening and Political Awareness Raising in Foreign Language Courses Based on Students' Needs - A Discussion on the Application of Corpus to French Teaching". Associate Professor Lei Xiuyun's presentation was entitled "An Exploration of the Causes of Chinese Students' Deficiencies in English Writing Logic - An Introduction". Ms. Lin Ling's presentation was entitled "A Study of Lexical Sequences in Academic Texts". Ms. Zhao Hongyan presented "Notional Verbs in Academic Texts: A Corpus-Driven Study of Learners' Usage".
