From October 14 to 16, the Martin Centre for Appliable Linguistics of SFL（Martin Centre hereafter）successfully held the 7th International Conference on Appliable Linguistics online with the theme of "Language and Education". More than 100 experts, scholars, teachers and students from home and abroad attended the conference.

The conference began on the morning of 14th. Prof. Chang Hui, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Prof. David Rose from University of Sydney delivered opening speeches respectively. Prof. Chang Hui introduced SFL’s development history, general situation and recent achievements, explained the founding philosophy and academic research objectives of Martin Centre, and stressed the key theoretical position of systemic-functional linguistics in language education research at home and abroad. Dr. David Rose in his speech affirmed the academic philosophy of Martin Centre and pointed out the important theoretical position of appliable linguistic theory in the study of educational discourse.

The seminar ended on the morning of October 16. Professor Wang Zhenhua, director of the Martin Centre, in his closing speech, thanked the speakers for their contributions to the study of educational discourse from different perspectives. He pointed out the appliability of systemic functional linguistics in explaining linguistic phenomena, communicative intentions and knowledge construction, and clarified the purpose of language in education, which is to teach, educate and dispel confusion. He also advocated that teachers should follow the concept of "respecting reality and revering theory" when carrying out teaching activities. Professor Martin, in his closing speech, spoke highly of the contributions of Chinese systemic-functional linguists in the field of educational discourse and looked forward to more application of systemic-functional linguistics theories and perspectives in bilingual and multilingual education research in the future.
