On November 4, the final of the 2023 FLTRP-Guocai Cup------Understanding Contemporary China National College Students' Foreign Language Proficiency Competition English Speech Contest Shanghai Division took place in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The competition was sponsored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai College English Teaching Research Association, co-organized by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and hosted by the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Ding Jian, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Kong Yingying, researcher of the Higher Education Office of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and Wang Yue, deputy director of the Higher Cluster Marketing Center of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

 

Ding Jian stressed the importance of telling good Chinese stories and spreading the voice of China, encouraging students to show their personal style in the competition and become high-quality foreign language talents, make greater contributions to further improving China's independent training ability of international communication talents, better pushing China to go to the world and  helping the world to understand China.

 

Kong Yingying believed that the competition was an important measure to promote the work of "the integration of ideological and political education into the whole process of higher education", promote the reform of foreign language education in universities, strengthen exchanges and mutual learning among universities, provide a platform for training foreign language talents who can tell Chinese stories well, and promote the improvement of foreign language teaching quality and talent training level in Shanghai.

 

Wang Yue said that the competition had created a model of contest-education integration to help build a high-quality education system, which was of great significance to deepening the foreign language education reform in universities, improving the quality of independent training of foreign language talents, and cultivating high-quality talents of foreign-related affairs.

 

30 contestants from 21 universities in Shanghai gathered together to shine on the stage of the competition, lighting up the spark of ideas with language, writing down profound viewpoint with words, and demonstrating their solid skills with critical thinking.

 

Professor Chen Yongjie from the School of Foreign Languages of SJTU, President of Shanghai College English Teaching Research Association, served as the chairman of the jury.

 

Professor Zhang Li from the School of Foreign Languages of SJTU served as the scoring judge and made comments.

 

Shen You, the national champion of the Star of Hope English Talent Competition Universities Group, and a lecturer from the SFL, served as the question judge.

 

With the guidance of Ms. Dai Rongrong of the School of Foreign Languages of SJTU, Shi Ruining, a 2021 undergraduate student from the Law School of SJTU, won the gold medal. Dai Rongrong won the Excellent Instructor Award .

 

18 winners from the competition will attend the national final in Beijing in December as Shanghai division representatives .
